.... As thrilled as I was to see Tom Corbett go up in smoke last night, it wasn't a great night for Democrats in Pennsylvania. We removed Corbett the man, and that is great, but we didn't extend those victories beyond electing Tom Wolf. In PA-6, PA-8, and PA-12, three races for Congress that began the year with excitement, we didn't do great. In fact, we did bad, and lost. We lost legislative seats too- a lot of them. We somehow lost eight more seats in the House, and now are down 119-84. We didn't win one Republican seat. We also lost three more Senate seats, and are down 30-20 again. It's like 2012 never happened there.
That's an awful year. Electing a governor is great, but that doesn't change the legislative dynamic. In Harrisburg, Tom Corbett's Harrisburg will still rule in the state legislature. This is a real failure by the party at-large, on what was a celebratory night. Pennsylvania's Democratic Party needs to engage in some real party building, and needs to start doing the outreach to win beyond Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. I'd blame the legislative committees there, but that's kind of irrelevant until we have some more competitive counties to contest.
