Anyone who knows me, knows that my confidence level in Howie Roseman is really, really low. For that reason alone, I'm fairly happy to see him lose the front-office power struggle to Chip Kelly, who I'm just suspect towards yet, at this point. At the very least, I see Chip Kelly as a football guy, more so than a lawyer, and therefore a better option to make football decisions. Besides that, he's the head coach, failure will fall on his head, and he had no confidence in the guy making football moves. The front-office re-alignment makes somewhat more sense than I thought, though Tom Gamble's firing seems weird to me yet.
Alright though, something strikes me funny about giving Chip Kelly "Bill Belichick like powers" to run the team. Don't get me wrong, while I didn't like the Chip hire, I'm not going to criticize 20-12 in his first two seasons. It is a little concerning though. Belichick has won three Super Bowls in New England, and made five. Chip has zero playoff wins yet, didn't make this season's post-season, and has a losing record against playoff teams in his two seasons. Obviously I prefer Chip to Howie, and obviously I think he's done a more than adequate job through two seasons to warrant at least another two seasons, but I can't say he's Belichick-esque yet. I'm concerned by last off-season, yes, though I'll agree to blame that all on Howie (even if it wasn't), and even more concerned by recent Eagles history. Andy Reid ran all football operations too, and Andy was a more accomplished coach. Andy didn't get us to the promised land though, nor did things run better when he took over everything.
Given the choices of Howie or Chip being boss, I'm pro-Chip. I do feel like this kind of power-play is a bit pre-mature though.
