I've counted myself in the Kathleen Kane camp in her fight against Frank Fina all the way. I've been angry that Philadelphia DA Seth Williams hired and defended Fina, I've said his gag order on her is ridiculous, and I've said she should be re-nominated in 2016 for a second term, up to this point. It's not that I don't agree with her on Fina, or her decision to not defend the state's same-sex marriage ban, or really any other particular decision she's made. It's that the sum of all the parts make Kane politically unviable for 2016.
A grand jury has recommended charges against the Attorney General in the leak case with Fina, and my guess is that Montgomery County's Republican DA will charge the Attorney General. In essence, Montgomery County Republican DA Risa Vetri Ferman has an indictment and just has to decide what to do with it. This comes on the heels of an embarrassing series of events in a public corruption sting case in Philadelphia, where she dropped the case, and Philly DA Seth Williams is now charging two state lawmakers, and reportedly will get a plea from one. It also comes on the heels of news of her divorce, from her husband whom her campaign reportedly owes $1.7 million, and he would logically want that money back in the settling. The good will she enjoyed in 2012 in mid-state is gone, as she did not get Tom Corbett with her investigation, and rather cleared him. She's now viewed more partisanly than she was in 2012 too, and it's hard to turn that one back.
I don't see a way from here to re-election for Kane. I could be very wrong, but I doubt it here. I don't see who will line-up to donate her. I don't see what swing voters she'll get. I don't see how, even if nominated, she avoids the fate of every other Democrat who ever ran.
