Last week I told you about the Senate Republican Freshmen joining together to call for the end of the Food Stamp, or SNAP Program. They in fact have unanimously got together and pledged to vote to "zero out" the program in next year's spending fight. A lot of their rationalization is based in lies and urban legend.
As you see in the picture above, people have a lot of incorrect, counter-factual views on food stamps. They think "illegals" get benefits, there is massive fraud, it's wasteful spending, and most of the users are unemployed. In fact, all of those views are false. Many views about "welfare" programs are similar, and are grounded in incorrect, ideological, hateful myths. They cannot and should not go unchallenged.
If there is no public pressure against the ideological lunatics who wish to starve the poor, it will go through quietly next year. We cannot allow that. No one benefits from dismantling this effective program.
