I grew up in a law enforcement household. At least five days a week, from the time I was about to turn two until four years ago (twenty-five years), my dad put on his uniform and badge, drove to work, and guarded a jail. Law enforcement paid my bills. I grew up supportive of cops. I'd like to say I still am. Millions of cops are protecting America tonight.
I also grew up not a racist, another credit to my parents. The reality is that it doesn't take a lot of fancy stats to see the problem: each time we see an African-American killed in a high-profile case, the killer seems to get off without punishment. Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, and now Eric Garner, all killed unnecessarily, and apparently none receiving any justice.
I honestly thought the Eric Garner incident would be different. It's on video. The video is so ridiculous it seemed obvious to me. The police officer in question put Garner into a clear choke-hold, which is clearly not allowed in New York City, and Garner's life ends before your eyes. Surely, there was a crime here. Surely there would be an indictment here.
Until there wasn't.
I like to support the police by nature. In this case, it was so obvious, so egregious, that this finding by the grand jury can't be allowed to stand as acceptable. I'm completely shocked. A cop literally choked a man to death on camera, and nothing is going to happen as a consequence. Nothing at all.
